Welcome to the Vancouver CBT Centre. We are a group of mental health professionals, including psychologists, counsellors, and doctoral psychology students with extensive and specialized experience in evidence-based treatments, including cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). The Vancouver CBT Centre was originally founded by the clinical team from the former UBC Anxiety Disorders Clinic. We specialize in treating complex and severely disabling anxiety disorders, as well as clinical depression, eating disorders, and addiction.
In order to aid in reducing the spread of Covid-19 and to safeguard the health of our clinicians, staff, and clients, many of the psychologists and counsellors at the Vancouver CBT Centre are only providing therapy services virtually via teletherapy until further notice (either by phone or video conference). All teletherapy services are conducted through secure online servers.
Currently, some of our clinicians are transitioning to in-person services on a limited basis, however all initial first-session assessments will remain virtual at this time. If you are an existing client, please speak to your clinician to determine whether an in-person appointment can be scheduled at this time.
If you are not a current client and are interested in scheduling an appointment for in-person services after your virtual assessment, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Our office manager can provide information on who is providing in-person psychological sessions at this time, as well as the wait times for these services.
The following is a brief listing of our Covid-19 protocol guidelines for in-person attendance at the Vancouver CBT Centre:
• All clients are requested to arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before their appointment in order to minimize the number of people in our waiting room at any given time.
• Only scheduled clients may enter the clinic. If you arrived with a friend or family member, we request that this person wait for you outside.
• We request that you not enter the clinic if you are ill, experiencing cold or flu symptoms, diagnosed with Covid, or have been in recent close contact with an individual diagnosed with Covid. In this case, we respectfully request that you reschedule your in-person appointment to another date, or switch to an online teletherapy session instead.
• Hand sanitizer stations are available at the entrance to the building and both inside and outside of the clinic space. We request that you sanitize your hands upon entering the clinic.
• The use of masks is required in all common areas within the clinic (e.g., reception, waiting room, bathroom).

The Vancouver CBT Centre provides private (fee for service) assessment and treatment for adults and teens experiencing anxiety, depression, and associated problems. Our clinical staff all have specialized training in CBT, as well as in complex or severe anxiety and depression. We also offer CBT for eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating problems.

Dr. Mark Lau of the Vancouver CBT Centre is proud to offer a number of workshops on Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). MBCT is a relatively new psychological approach originally developed to help individuals stay well after recovering from repeated bouts of depression. MBCT is based on the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn.MBCT combines the ideas of cognitive therapy for depression with meditation pactices from MBSR designed to cultivate mindfulness. Dr. Mark Lau is offering an online 8-week course through teletherapy designed to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, or CBT, is an evidenced-based psychological therapy. With over 350 research studies investigating it, CBT has been found to be one of the most effective treatments for a number of problems, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and trauma.
CBT involves understanding the behaviours we engage in and the thoughts we have that contribute to feelings of distress, and maintain or worsen the problem areas in our lives.
With CBT, individuals learn new skills to better manage problematic situations. In short, CBT teaches you how to become your own therapist, and to develop a sense of control over anxiety and distress rather than feeling controlled by it.

The Vancouver CBT Centre is happy to be able to continue to offer virtual therapy sessions to interested clients moving forward. This will allow us to offer a choice of either online or in-person sessions to local BC residents living in the Lower Mainland. However, this also allows us to offer virtual therapy services to residents throughout the province of British Columbia, including those living in the Okanagan, the Fraser Valley, the Sunshine Coast, Vancouver Island, the Kootenays, the Cariboo, and Northern BC.
Residents of the Yukon are also able to be seen for online videoconferencing sessions through the Vancouver CBT Centre.
All teletherapy services are provided through secure and encrypted online servers.
